BLOCK SEPT 14 OF YOUR DIARY

When it comes to matters of records, the current secretary seems to be hopelessly out of date. The AGM was held on May 25, 2008. The fact that I have not had the opportunity to post the updates is inexcusable. However here is the new committee.

1)Anindya Chowdhury (batch of ’83)

2) Avijit Lahiri (batch of ’77)

3) Binoy Chakraborty (batch of ’80)

4) Biswajit Bardhan (batch of ’80)

5) Dhrubajyoti Roy (batch of ’69) (Vice president)

6) Dibakar Pal (batch of ’95) (Treasurer)

7) Gopeswar Mondal (batch of ’67)

8) Indranil Sen (batch of ’82) (Asst Secy)

9) Pradip Neogi (batch of ’83) (Asst Secy)

10) Rudrarup Basu (batch of ’80)

11) Suparna Pathak (batch of ’76) (Secretary)

12) Ranjan Bhattacharya (batch of ’77)

13) Surojit Ghosh (batch of 69) (President)

14) Debansu stays on in the committee by virtue of being the immediate past secretary of the association.

Subsequently, the committee members have sat down twice to consider the future course of action. One on 26.07.08 and the other on 10.08.08. One must mention in passing that the last one was really memorable due to the individual touches of Benu and Pradip. The committee members had a delectable lunch, courtesy Pradip and Benu. Benu’s wife made the daal and menu comprised daal, aalu bhaja and mangsor jhol. There was chatni for the ‘sesh pater’ touch along with misti doi. If you are lolling, it can’t be helped. It indeed is a privilege to have Pradip and Benu as the hosts. But we are digressing. Let us get down to the more serious business.
Most of the members, by now, know that we begun our journey as the school completed its 50 years. The intention was to initiate a network of old boys and through the network, initiate actions to benfit the school. Whatever that we stand for today has largely been due to the school. And the old boys’ network is meant to be the vehicle to show our gratitude to the school.
Recognition of board achievers: Those of you who have been following the activities of the alumni association would know that we have started giving out medallions in the names of Dinesh babu to the best scorer in Madhyamik, Samanta babu to the highest scorer in Physics, Subir babu to the highest scorer in Bengali, Nikhil babu to the highest scorer in English. This year we are adding one more to the list. The highest scorer in Higher Secondary would get a medallion in the name of Nagen babu.
Need-based scholarship: The committee has also decided to institute need-based scholarships to five students from the primary section of the school. Under this programme, the association will pay the fees and buy the books for the selected students. The selection criteria will be decided by a committee of ex-teachers along with three GB members two of whom also happen to be teachers. The proposed committee will comprise Dr Indranil Sen and Avijit Lahiri, Subodh babu and Arobindo babu. Biswajit Bardhan will be the legal pillar of the committee. The terms of reference for the committee is simple. It will lay down the selection criteria that will decide the winners. The association will provide the funding.

Reunion and funding: To run such activities on a scale that would appeal and will also have an impact we need fund. But this cannot be generated through the efforts of a handful. It took us three years to confidently get involved in the scholarship programme. Ideally, a programme of this nature should have a tenure of more than a year. But till such time we are assured of a regular flow, we cannot really commit ourselves to the programme. Neither can we commit ourselves to a corpus, that could provide instant help to our members in case of medical emergencies. So it is an earnest request to all of you to please come forward and join us in the effort to raise funds for the association.
So what will we do in the forthcoming reunion? Apart from Benu’s attempt to rope in Nachiketa, we will felicitate Kesto babu and Rama di. And the rest of the evening will be devoted to forging new bonds and renewing old ties.

  1. Thats major way ahead. We need foreign funds coming in now. So I would request all to help the initiative open heartedly and transfer fund to the association account. These days its quite easy to electronically transfer fund to bank accounts. One can also send draft payable to the BNNV Alumni Association at SBI Cossipore. Pleas also mail about your transfer so that I could ping Dibakar to mail you a receipt.

  2. Siddharthada, the committee is not formed on the basis of batch representation ( I wish if we had that amount of people participating in GB meetings ) as of now. Its just who participate in the day to day work of the association at this point of time. In todays’ busy life you know – being physically present is a challenge.
